Baby showers are relatively new, having become popular only in the middle of the 20th century, started in the late 1940s and the 1950s, as post-war women were expecting the Baby Boomers generation.

The term shower is often assumed to mean that the expectant parent is "showered" with gifts.

A baby shower is about much more than checking items off a baby registry list. These gatherings also play an important emotional role, helping parents ease into the transition to parenthood. By bringing friends and family together, baby showers create space for shared advice, encouragement, and reassurance during a time of big change.

Baby shower guests usually include closest family and friends, such as parents, siblings, grandparents, and best friends. You can also expand the list to include extended family, close coworkers, and neighbors depending on your venue size and budget.

Traditionally, a close friend, sister, cousin, or coworker plans and hosts a baby shower. Modern etiquette is flexible; grandmothers, aunts, or multiple people pooling efforts often share the job. While old rules said parents should not host their own, today expecting parents frequently plan their own events if no one volunteers.
